Porta Nigra

Imperial Baths

Part of the labyrinth, below the Roman baths

I'm not sure how this translates.

Germany's oldest city, Trier pre-dates the Roman Empire and is home to a variety of sites, including the Porta Nigra (black gate), the one remaining of four gates that once provided entrance through the city's walls.  The Porta Nigra overlooks one of the city's main shopping areas.  At the opposite end are the ruins of the largest Roman baths north of the Alps.  The city straddles the Moselle River, and is surrounded by vineyards.

Great pics! Can you get into the labyrinth? (There doesn't seem to be a gate or anything, but I wonder how far in you can go.)

Um yeah... The bus was.. startling!

The tunnels are pretty extensive. It's fun walking around down there.

I can't tell you what the deal is with the bus. We were walking back to our car after walking around the city and saw that. It cracked us up so we took a picture. My original caption for that picture was, "This is a tour bus, f----rs!" But realizing that sometimes the pictures don't display I thought someone might wonder if I'd lost my mind.

Grrrr, freakin Hisssss! Third attept to post!

I love your pictures, damn it!

Edit: Well now, that worked! [etva smiles politely]

My favorites are the Imperial Baths and the Labyrinth. In all my travels, I've never had the opportunity to visit a labyrinth, but I think it would be such fun. Can you walk all the way through them, or are there restrictions?

Er, no comment on the bus photo - LOL:)

Yes, you can walk all through them. It's a bit of a maze. I think they were intended to drain water from the baths and were also used for heating.

These old ornate buildings are so intriguing. I would love to visit and explore these, but until then your pictures are wonderful! Love the Imperial Baths, that's one cool place! And what can I say aout that bus? Ha!

It's a neat city, and there's a lot more to it than I've posted here. We probably liked touring the Roman baths the best though. Thanks for stopping rottlady!

I like the little train bus in the picture. The other one - it seems like a nice enough bus to have such an attitude. lols

Are the baths still in use? That would be soo interesting to see. Great pictures.

Hahaha - I used Bing and translated from German to English and ti's the same....

You can get a driving tour of the area on the train bus, but we've never done that. As for the baths, no they're not in use. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, they were never actually completed, so I'm not sure if they were ever used.

Regarding the tour bus, I guess some words are universal.

Yeah, so did I, lol. Then I figured it might be a surname, and it turns out that it means "sheep shears".

Old architecture is fascinating to me. I always ask the same question.....how did they do that way back then? Great shots CT, thanks for sharing!

I'm not quite sure what to say about the bus so I won't make any jokes :)

Another set of great shots, CT! The city is fascinating but I find the old Roman baths and labyrinth most intriguing. And I'd love to ride around in that little shuttle bus or whatever it is -- a very colorful mode of transportation.

Thanks Holly... ancient ruins always fascinate me, for the fact that they were built so elaborately in the first place, then stood the test of time so well.

Hi dog!... Fly to Europe... hitch a ride on the F----r Bus... and you can see all of Europe you want. It's that simple. Or you can look me up. Either way, it's no problem. Thanks for coming by, in any case.

Great pictures .
I wish I had seen them yesterday . There was a young lady , going door to door selling re-placement doors and windows . She could make a big sell , if I could have directed her to Porta Nigra . L O L

I don't like , door to door sales people . I think she rode that bus , some time in the past . After I told her , I didn't want re-placement windows at this time . I think she was calling me a bus as she walked away .

I hope you get a chuckle out of my comment . You've posted some great pictures .

I've never been a fan of door-to-door sales people either, but I guess they're just trying to make a living. But you're right, there's plenty of window needs in ancient Roman architecture. Maybe she needs to expand her market.

I just came across your column. Nice shots, love them all.

The bus was x-rated! I need a pop up sign like that for my car, when I'm being tail-gated.

Looking forward to checking out more of your stuff. :)
