Although I’ve placed pictures of Riga on previous posts, it occurred to me that I’ve never posted a whole set.  This is from a brief trip I took in the summer of 2010.  Latvia is one of three Baltic states that gained independence from the Soviet Union in the early 90s, the others being Estonia and Lithuania.  Riga, Latvia’s Capital, is the largest city of the three countries.  Founded in 1201, this former Hanseatic League member borders the Baltic Sea’s Gulf of Riga at the mouth of the Daugava River.

The first picture was taken from my hotel’s observation deck.  The second is of the 42 meter tall Freedom Statue, which honors soldiers killed in the 1918-1920 War of Independence.  The figure you see above the trees sits atop a tall obelisk.

The city is a unique blend of architectural styles as evidenced by picture three.  The Art Academy was established in 1921 and offers a variety of art curricula at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels.  Pictures four and five are of the ornately landscaped Bastion Hill Park, the centerpiece of which is a meandering canal that runs from, and back to, the Daugava River.  Five people were killed in the park in 1991 when Soviet Special Forces launched a last-ditch effort to stifle Latvian independence.  Today it’s a model of peacefulness, and you wouldn’t know to look at these pictures that it sits in the center of a fairly bustling metropolis.

Pictures six and seven are in the old town district.  Saint Peter’s Church has a lengthy and varied history that began as early as 1209.

What I’ve posted is a very small sample.  Riga is one of the most interesting places I’ve had the chance to tour since I’ve been here.  The Latvian people are some of the friendliest I’ve met, and the city itself has a mellow, laid back quality to it.  If you ever get the opportunity to tour Europe, don’t neglect this little gem.

Looks like a beautiful place. I love that canal view and the last one of St. Peter's church! I always look forward to your posts. Gives me a chance to see places that I will likely never travel to. :)

Hi Holly! I actually took a bunch of pictures of that canal. I couldn't help myself, because it made for such a calm, serene focal point. The whole park is just a real nice place to hang out and wander. Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks for the tour, CT! I would love to visit Latvia, and have always heard such wonderful things about the old cities there. I think the Typical Street Scene is my favorite -- it's just so timeless, despite the modern clothing of the pedestrians -- a fascinating contrast.

Now that I look at these, I wish I'd spent more time in that area of the city - the historic "old city" area. At the very least, I should have taken more pictures while I was there. I didn't know at the time that I'd one day be on newsvine, and belong to the newsvine photographers group, etc, etc... LOL. These days, I try to take pictures with all of that in mind, though I'm probably not any better at it. But I try. :)

Oh, I've bemoaned that very same thing; wishing I'd had the foresight to take photos of things rather than people, or people rather than things. Now I just photograph everything! LOL:)

Nice shots. Looks like a beautiful place. My brother lived there for a few years and is currently living in Britain with his Latvian girlfriend--a former resident of Riga.

It's on my list of places to visit one day...

I'd highly recommend it if you can. The cool thing is, you have family members to fill you in on the details before you go. For me, it was kind of a spur of the moment, whirlwind trip so I didn't have a lot of time to research the sites before I went. I'd love to go back, but I'm not sure it's in the cards.

What a beautiful and interesting place! I like all you images, but that "Typical street scene" is really cool, I love how the buildings seem to tower over the people.

I'm going to clip this to some travel groups.

Thanks rottlady, that's nice of you. It's like I said, I wish I'd taken more pictures of that area. It is neat how the old buildings form "canyons" above the cobblestone streets.

I can't imagine a town that old 1201. Wow. That's amazing Circled and the pictures are too. I think the Freedom Monument is very striking as are the others. Thanks for posting photos of a place that most of us will never get to see.

Thanks DTH! Like I said, I wish I done more to record some of the architecture. There are also a lot of cool modern buildings in the area that make an interesting old-new contrast. But I'm with you. I prefer the older stuff.

Hi lauhal... thanks for commenting. The Freedom Statue is pretty cool, and fairly highly regarded by the local population.

CT, I am so glad you visited my column because it gave me a chance to visit yours (with Kearney's help)! Beautiful pictures and article about Riga here! I love visiting places like it. Years ago, I was in Kiev, Ukraine and saw some of the most beautiful architecture of the only part of eastern Europe I have visited. DubrovniK has been on our list too, just haven't got there yet. A Baltic trip would certainly be something worth doing. Thank you.

Hi Neetu!... getting a visit from you is a nice surprise. Like I said, I loved Latvia, and my family and I like to travel. That's why I was drawn to your pics of Spain. If you post any from Kiev I'd be interested in them as well. We've talked about visiting Croatia, but I'm not sure we're going to make it anytime soon. Good to see you in any case. Thanks for stopping by!

You are welcome, CT! I am going to try and work on some of my trips and I have one coming up to India soon. I mean, I am traveling there. I have photo prints from my trip to Kiev back in 1998 and I will see if I can upload decent ones on the computer. That was before we had a digital camera. There is plenty of travel fodder I have, just not the best memory with names of places in foreign lands and I never keep a travel journal unfortunately. Maybe from now on....
